Anthropic has established a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to integrate AI into physical life science experiments. The facility allows the Claude model to guide laboratory robots in drug discovery and rare disease research, creating a closed loop of experimental design, execution, and analysis.
The company previously launched Claude Science, a platform providing research tools for genomics, single-cell analysis, proteomics, and structural biology. This platform enables researchers to retrieve data from professional databases, analyze protein structures, and manage computational workflows.
In August, Anthropic introduced a model hardware standard to create a unified interface for physical lab equipment. This standard connects devices such as robotic arms, liquid handlers, and microscopes, allowing Claude to monitor instrument status, schedule operations, and adjust parameters based on real-time results.
While the system can handle some operational errors, such as failed tip pickups, it currently lacks the intuition to manage complex physical constraints like sample foaming. Consequently, Claude operates under expert supervision for critical experimental design and safety control.
Anthropic has also launched a life science validation program for verified research institutions. Participants can access advanced models for drug discovery and clinical development, provided they pass security and ethical reviews. The company has not yet disclosed specific research projects, timelines, or financial data regarding its lab operations.
