Anthropic has introduced support for mods in its Claude Code tool, allowing developers to customize functionality and interface elements. These mods are event-driven functions written in TypeScript or JavaScript that integrate into the existing plugin system.

The feature requires Claude Code version 2.1.287 or later and is enabled by default. Users can manage these mods through the existing /plugin command and marketplaces. Several core components, such as the /diff pane and telemetry, have been converted into these modular units.

Early access for the feature occurred between September 9 and 15, 2026. The infrastructure for plugins was initially launched in public beta in October 2025. Developers have already created various community tools, including games and context monitors.

Security concerns have emerged as mods operate with the same permissions as Claude Code, including file access and command execution. During early access, 14 out of 31 analyzed public mods were found capable of executing host processes on a user's machine.

Organizations may now need to implement new security policies regarding mod installation and trusted marketplaces. Users are advised to vet mods as they would any other software, given that these tools can launch programs directly on their hardware.
