Anthropic has released Claude Sonnet 5.5, the second model in its latest family. The company positions the new tool as a faster and more cost-effective solution for coding, document creation, and routine office tasks.

The model generates output more than 30% faster than its predecessor, Sonnet 5. According to Anthropic, it costs up to 30% less per task due to higher token efficiency, while base pricing remains at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.

In performance tests, Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, surpassing Opus 5.5 at 66.4%. On the GDPval-AA benchmark, the models were nearly tied with scores of 1,844 and 1,846 respectively. The company notes that Opus 5.5 remains the preferred choice for complex tasks requiring sustained judgment.

Sonnet 5.5 features upgraded cybersecurity safeguards, marking the first time this level of protection is included in a Sonnet-class model. The tool is currently available via the Claude Platform, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.

Anthropic also announced plans to expand the Claude 5.5 family with the upcoming release of Claude Haiku 5.5, which is intended for high-volume, cost-sensitive applications.
