Andrew Ng, co-founder of Google Brain and Coursera, stated that warnings from AI model developers regarding existential risks are akin to science fiction. He argued that such rhetoric may hinder the technology from providing maximum societal benefits.
Ng suggested that the current wave of public relations campaigns, similar to those seen in the early days of the AI boom, is likely intended to influence regulatory directions. He expressed frustration with the recent discourse surrounding potential catastrophic outcomes.
The debate intensified following the resignation of former Anthropic and OpenAI researcher Jacob Coxon. Coxon accused his former employers of risking human lives in the race to develop superintelligent AI, suggesting a threat of extinction by the end of the decade.
Industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have called for slower development of frontier models and increased safety measures. Ng, who previously worked with both executives, acknowledged risks like cybersecurity but dismissed extinction fears as non-scientific.
Ng emphasized that the industry should focus on solving practical engineering challenges to improve AI safety. He advocates for continuing development to ensure the technology is utilized for positive applications.
