AMD has introduced a tetrahedral grid technology designed to optimize ray tracing performance in real-time gaming. This approach allows for the rendering of hundreds of millions of independently animated triangles without the significant overhead typically associated with traditional acceleration structures.
The technology was detailed in a research paper showcasing a landscape scene featuring approximately 25,000 animated plants. At peak detail, the scene comprises roughly 2.8 billion triangles, with 500 million triangles processed per frame using primary and shadow rays.
Testing on a Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics card demonstrated a frame rate exceeding 60 fps at Full HD resolution. The method reduces memory consumption by 50 times, requiring only 1.7 GB of memory compared to the 80 GB typically needed for such a workload.
Furthermore, the technology significantly improves efficiency by reducing the BVH update time per frame by approximately 100 times. The processing time dropped from 300 ms to 3.3 ms, enabling faster scene updates during ray tracing operations.
