A Reddit user reported an extortion attempt by an Airbnb host in Australia, who claimed to be one of the largest operators in the region. The host demanded $1700 in damages, alleging that the guest caused a toilet overflow and subsequent water damage to the property.
The host provided an image as evidence of the incident, which turned out to be AI-generated. The fraud was exposed when Google Gemini identified a SynthID watermark embedded within the image. The user had originally posted the image to the r/isthisAI subreddit to verify its authenticity.
The guest successfully contested the claim, and Airbnb officially ruled that the demand for compensation was invalid. The user noted that the property layout made the alleged flooding physically impossible, as there was another floor below that would have been severely affected by such a volume of water.
This incident serves as a warning for travelers to document the condition of their rental properties before checking out. Taking photos and videos of the premises remains the primary method for guests to protect themselves against fraudulent damage claims.
