Developers are leveraging AI models like DeepSeek and Claude to create tools that remove bloatware and advertisements from smart TVs. These solutions aim to declutter home screens, improve interface speed, and restrict data tracking.
The project known as dumbtv allows users to disable manufacturer-specific ads, tracking features, and unwanted system updates. It supports various platforms, including Fire TV Edition, as well as Android TV and Google TV devices from brands like Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, and Xiaomi.
Another tool, cleanyourtv, enables remote management of applications via Wi-Fi. It allows users to disable pre-installed software and replace the default interface with a simplified layout. The creator utilized Claude Code to develop this solution after seeking to remove ads from his parents' television.
Following the publication of instructions on GitHub, thousands of users implemented these methods on devices from manufacturers including Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, and LG within two days. Neither tool requires root access, and both allow for the restoration of factory settings.
These projects also address concerns regarding Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology. This feature analyzes audio, video, and digital fingerprints to track viewing habits for personalized advertising. By disabling these functions, users regain control over their privacy.
