Executives from major artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are conducting private simulations to prepare for potential public and political backlash following a catastrophic AI-related event. According to a report by Axios, these sessions focus on managing the fallout from scenarios where AI systems might cause significant real-world harm.
Industry leaders anticipate that a large-scale incident, such as a cyberattack disabling critical infrastructure like financial services, internet communications, or power grids, is a plausible threat. Such an event could trigger widespread public opposition against the technology and its prominent figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
While scenario planning is standard practice in corporate and national security sectors, many AI researchers believe that a major safety incident is inevitable. OpenAI stated that it regularly organizes integrity drills to discuss various potential scenarios, emphasizing that these exercises are intended to ensure the team is prepared for unexpected situations rather than predicting their occurrence.
