Tech executives, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and xAI CEO Elon Musk, have called for a slower development pace for frontier AI models. Amodei announced plans to implement additional safety measures, such as independent third-party evaluations, to ensure responsible progress.
Market analysts suggest this shift toward cautious development may pressure semiconductor and AI-related stocks in the short term. Investors are concerned that slower innovation cycles could impact corporate profitability, as high valuations in the AI sector are currently tied to expectations of rapid model iterations.
Data shows recent market volatility: the Nasdaq 100 index has fallen over 4% from its June peak, the US semiconductor index dropped 14%, and Asian tech stocks declined by nearly 8%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 and MSCI World Index saw slight gains of approximately 0.6% during the same period.
Despite the immediate market reaction, experts from Global X Management and Allianz Global Investors believe the long-term investment thesis for AI remains intact. They argue that demand for infrastructure, power, and cooling equipment will persist, as companies shift focus from rapid development to asset monetization.
Trading activity on the Hyperliquid platform reflected these concerns, with SK Hynix contracts falling by approximately 2.5% as of 2:00 PM Singapore time on Sunday. Analysts note that while the pace of technological advancement may decelerate, the underlying trend of AI adoption and infrastructure investment is expected to continue.
