On September 15, AI-related stocks rebounded despite a broader market decline. This recovery followed a selloff on September 14, which was triggered by comments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, supported by OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk, regarding the need for caution in AI development.
During the September 14 session, the Nasdaq Composite fell by 0.56% to 0.6%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped between 5% and 5.9%. Nvidia shares fell 3.4%, and Micron declined between 5% and 6%. By Tuesday, September 15, the S&P 500 closed down 0.48% and the Nasdaq fell 0.56%, yet Qualcomm, AMD, and Marvell recorded gains.
Market analysts attributed the initial selloff to temporary volatility rather than structural changes. Investors continue to focus on capital expenditure plans, with hyperscaler spending projected to reach nearly $795 billion in 2026 and $1.08 trillion in 2027.
Amazon has increased its 2026 capital expenditure target to $220 billion. Microsoft has also maintained or increased its spending guidance, citing strong cloud growth and demand for AI-powered services from enterprise customers.
