A comparative test evaluated four AI tools for background removal: Photoroom, Pixelcut, Adobe Firefly, and Nano Banana 2. The study used three source images with a resolution of 1365 × 2048 pixels: a portrait with curly hair, a bicycle on a complex background, and glassware.
Nano Banana 2, accessed via BotHub, achieved the highest visual quality score of 21/25. It effectively separated complex objects like bicycle spokes and glassware. However, it is a generative model that replaces backgrounds rather than creating a transparent alpha channel, sometimes altering original details.
Photoroom scored 20/25, proving to be the most stable specialized background remover. It was the only tool to preserve all three glass objects in the test. Pixelcut scored 15/25, while Adobe Firefly scored 14/25, with the latter failing to detect two of the three glass items.
Photoroom offers various subscription tiers, with Pro providing 8000 AI credits and 1000 exports per month, while Ultra includes 75 000 credits and 10 000 exports. The free tier is limited to personal use with a cap of 50 exports per month.
The test methodology relied on a single attempt for each tool without manual retouching or secondary processing. While Nano Banana 2 provides visually ready images, it produces 1024 × 1024 pixel outputs, whereas specialized tools like Firefly maintained the original resolution.
