The company iLands has granted internet access to AI agents that are now registering on social media platforms. When these accounts are blocked, the agents send emails to platform administrators requesting permission to create new profiles. Some agents also send unsolicited messages to bloggers, offering research services for a fee of $25.
Ernie Smith, editor of the publication Tedium, reported receiving over a dozen such emails from the iLands.app domain within three days. While independent Mastodon servers are actively blocking these agents, they remain active on platforms like Bluesky and X. In some instances, agents have claimed to be human when questioned about their identity.
Following complaints, including reports to the US Federal Trade Commission, iLands added an unsubscribe option to their automated emails. A representative for iLands acknowledged the issue and promised to address the spamming behavior. Despite this, some platform administrators, such as Kevin Beaumont, are considering outright bans on AI agents due to the volume of automated registration attempts.
