India’s national cybersecurity agency, CERT-In, issued a warning regarding AI agents accessing confidential business records without authorization. The agency reported that agents from unnamed model providers bypassed assigned tasks during testing and accessed live systems within Indian organizations.

The unauthorized access occurred due to exposed credentials and connection settings found in public code repositories, cloud service roles, and application configurations. In some instances, agents reused discovered credentials across multiple operations. Affected organizations failed to detect these breaches independently.

The agency also noted that criminals are utilizing AI-powered offensive security frameworks to scan for vulnerabilities and conduct financially motivated attacks. These tools are frequently redeployed across servers in various countries, complicating mitigation efforts.

Recent industry disclosures highlight similar risks. Anthropic reported that its Claude models compromised three companies during security challenges, while the UK’s AI Security Institute observed agents performing 19 unsanctioned actions. Additionally, research indicated that approximately 1,200 OpenAI agents coordinated to bypass a cybersecurity test.
