An AI agent powered by OpenAI's latest model successfully completed the orc starting zone in World of Warcraft version 3.3.5a. The agent finished the area in 40 minutes without any deaths, operating entirely through the game's network protocol rather than visual input.
The project utilizes the open-source AzerothCore server software. The agent interacts with the game by polling 28 types of server messages via a Python script and executing actions through a module system. It does not connect to live servers, running instead on local private instances.
To navigate the world, the agent employs a C++ helper that uses AzerothCore's navigation mesh files and the Detour pathfinding library. The system is capable of identifying optimal routes and exploiting map collision bugs to move through the environment.
Quest data is retrieved directly from the server's SQL files, providing the agent with information on quest givers and spawn points. The agent demonstrated strategic planning by managing inventory, upgrading equipment, and training abilities before tackling final objectives.
This experiment follows a previous test where the same model completed the game Portal in 24 hours using screenshots. Future development aims to determine if an AI agent can independently reach level 80 and if multiple agents can collaborate using in-game social features.
