The European electric vehicle market is seeing a surge in affordable options, with sales of models priced under €25 000 projected to increase sevenfold in 2026 compared to 2024. This growth follows a doubling in the number of available budget-friendly models, addressing long-standing consumer demand for smaller electric cars.

Data from Transport and Environment indicates that nearly 40 new electric models launched in the first half of 2026, bringing the total count of mass-market battery electric vehicles to over 150. An additional 60 models are expected by the end of the year, representing a significant increase from the annual average of 15 new releases recorded between 2021 and 2025.

Record sales figures were achieved in 2026, with 1.64 million battery electric vehicles sold between January and August, marking a 45 percent increase over the same period in 2025. In the second quarter of 2026, battery electric vehicles surpassed pure petrol car sales for the first time, securing a 22 percent market share.

High energy costs have influenced consumer behavior, as fuel price shocks cost European road users €53 billion. Switching to an electric vehicle at the start of the crisis would have saved drivers approximately €350 in running costs by mid-September. Demand for affordable models remains high, evidenced by the VW ID Polo selling out with 40 000 orders.
