Tesla intends to expand its Gigafactory in Grünheide, Germany, with a new production hall. The company plans to submit formal proposals for approval in December. The proposed facility will cover approximately 536,000 square metres, more than double the size of the current 219,000-square-metre production hall.
The current annual production capacity of the plant is 375,000 Model Y units, with a long-term goal of reaching one million vehicles. Construction of the new hall could potentially start in 2027. While the site currently employs around 12,000 people, Tesla has not yet disclosed specific details regarding future staff increases.
The expansion project is structured into three distinct phases, each requiring partial approval. The first phase, focused on modernizing existing facilities and logistics, received approval in October 2024. The second phase centers on the new production hall, while the third phase will include factory equipment and a freight railway station.
To address water consumption concerns, Tesla plans to implement an in-house water circuit and wastewater treatment system. The company expects these measures to keep water usage within the limits contractually agreed upon with the local water association, Wasserverband Strausberg-Erkner, despite the planned facility expansion.
