A16z released its seventh report on top generative AI consumer apps on October 5, 2026, expanding the list to 150 entries. The research incorporates YipitData insights on US consumer credit card spending to analyze market trends.

Data shows that as of August 2026, only 4.5% of US consumers maintain active paid subscriptions for services like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, up from 2.1% the previous year. Currently, 85% of revenue for these products comes from subscriptions, while advertising accounts for only 13–14%.

Spending remains highly concentrated among power users. The top 1% of AI spenders pay an average of $903 per month, whereas the median user spends $25. A16z partner Olivia Moore suggests that shifting toward ad-supported models could better facilitate mass market adoption.

Moore estimates that if AI products matched Google’s annual revenue of approximately $460 per user through advertising, the sector could generate up to $152 billion annually in the US. OpenAI is already exploring this path, with its ad business reaching a $1 billion annualized run rate by August 2026.
