The Nevada Transportation Authority permit, which restricted Zoox to a maximum of 100 robotaxis in the state, expires on September 25. This regulatory change allows the Amazon-owned company to scale its commercial fleet in Las Vegas without previous constraints.
Zoox currently operates approximately 100 custom-built, steering-wheel-free vehicles across four U.S. cities, including Austin and Miami. Las Vegas remains the only location where the company currently charges for passenger rides, a service launched last month following a federal safety exemption.
The federal exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration permits Zoox to deploy up to 2,500 vehicles annually for the next two years. While the company has not disclosed specific expansion numbers, it plans to increase its fleet size gradually to meet demand.
Competition in the region is intensifying as the Nevada Transportation Authority recently issued commercial permits to Tesla, Uber, and Waymo. These new authorizations could introduce up to 7,000 additional autonomous vehicles to Clark County over the next 12 months.
