Zoox is expanding its autonomous vehicle testing operations to Houston, Texas. The company plans to begin these trials later this month, marking its entry into a new market characterized by complex road networks and challenging weather conditions, including high heat and heavy rain.

For the initial phase in Houston, the company will utilize retrofitted SUVs rather than its proprietary robotaxi model. These test vehicles will operate with human safety drivers on board to monitor performance in the city's unique traffic environment.

In addition to testing, Zoox has already outlined plans to establish a dedicated charging and maintenance facility in Houston. The company currently operates in 11 other markets across the United States, including cities such as Austin, Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.

This expansion follows the recent launch of the company's paid robotaxi service last month. Zoox previously secured regulatory approval to operate paid services without human controls, following a period of testing that required human oversight.
