Zcash celebrates its 10th anniversary following its mainnet launch on October 28, 2016. The protocol currently maintains a market capitalization of nearly $22 billion, with ZEC trading between $1,270 and $1,300 as of late October 2026.
Technological evolution includes the 2018 Sapling upgrade and the 2022 NU5 update, which introduced the Halo 2 system to eliminate trusted setups. The recent Ironwood upgrade in July 2026 added formal verification for supply auditing, while the upcoming NU7 update on November 5, 2026, aims to reduce block times from 75 to 25 seconds.
Adoption metrics show that approximately 29% of issued ZEC, or 4.9 million tokens, are held in shielded pools. Total issuance has reached 17 million tokens out of a 21 million hard cap. Institutional interest is highlighted by the Grayscale ZCSH spot ETF, which launched on NYSE Arca on August 25, 2026, and surpassed $1 billion in assets under management in September.
Governance discussions are currently focused on the allocation of block rewards. Currently, 8% of rewards fund Zcash Community Grants, which holds approximately $125 million. Co-founder Sean Bowe has proposed reallocating these funds toward a new Network Sustainability Mechanism, though no final decision has been reached.
