Sean Bowe, co-founder of Zcash, has proposed halting the automatic funding stream for the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) program. He argues that the current treasury is sufficient to support ongoing projects without requiring additional automatic payments.
Bowe submitted a draft proposal on GitHub suggesting that the 8% share of the Zcash block subsidy currently allocated to ZCG should be redirected to the network’s sustainability reserve. Existing funds held by the program would remain untouched under this plan.
The redirected funds would flow into the Network Sustainability Mechanism until the current funding period concludes in 2028. This mechanism is designed to remove ZEC from circulation and reissue it through future block rewards.
According to the ZCG dashboard, the program currently holds 91,453 ZEC and $8.8 million in cash, with $2.4 million in outstanding grant commitments. The ZEC holdings are valued at approximately $111 million.
Separately, the network’s development lockbox holds 72,351 ZEC, which is valued at roughly $89 million. Previously, in September, Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi also suggested ending the Zcash developer fund to avoid potential politicization.
