Xeal, a company specializing in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, plans to deploy 100,000 Nvidia GPUs across its roadside sites in the United States. The initiative, branded as Latient, aims to create a distributed edge inference network by utilizing idle energy capacity at existing charging stations.
According to CEO Nikhil Bharadwaj, Xeal sites currently operate at less than 10% of their permitted power capacity. By installing Latient Pods, which resemble standard broadband cabinets, the company intends to provide ultra-low latency computing services. Each pod is designed to house up to 48 GPUs.
The company operates over 1,600 locations and may expand to nearly 2,100 sites to support the hardware deployment. Xeal claims its Metro Edge architecture will deliver inference latency of under 20ms, significantly faster than traditional centralized data centers.
The project faces security challenges, as EV charging stations have recently become targets for copper cable theft. Deploying high-value hardware, such as 48 Nvidia Blackwell GPUs, which the report estimates to be worth approximately $2 million per pod, will require significant physical security measures.
