Wolfspeed has officially launched its premium 200 mm n-type silicon carbide substrate for commercial use. This new material is engineered to enhance device yields by minimizing defects and improving wafer-shape stability. It expands the company's existing 200 mm silicon carbide portfolio, which first reached the market in September 2025.

The substrate features a defect density of fewer than 0.01 micropipes per square centimeter, equating to fewer than three micropipes per wafer. This quality metric was confirmed using industry-standard X-ray topography. While the company noted that threading screw dislocation counts are low, it did not provide specific numerical data for this metric.

The company emphasizes that higher substrate quality improves epitaxial performance and consistency across production lots. By reducing material variability, manufacturers can increase the probability of successful initial designs and reduce qualification timelines. These improvements are particularly significant for large, high-current dies where defect density impacts yield.

Wolfspeed is currently accepting orders for the new substrate. The company has allocated dedicated production capacity and maintains a product expansion roadmap. Management confirmed the ability to scale manufacturing output within its current silicon carbide facilities to meet growing customer demand.
