Wisconsin has secured $25 million in federal funding via the NEVI programme to install 42 new fast-charging stations. These sites will be located in various communities, including Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Eau Claire, and Green Bay, with equipment placed at businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores.
Individual grants for these projects range from $397,000 to $930,000. The largest single award was granted to a site at Walker’s Point Plaza in Milwaukee. Selection criteria included site location, potential for future development, the availability of pull-through parking for larger vehicles, and the operating hours of the host businesses.
This latest allocation brings the total funding awarded through Wisconsin’s NEVI programme to approximately $62 million, supporting a total of 120 charging projects. Currently, 25 of these stations are operational. The state has now met the federal requirement of providing charging infrastructure at every 50-mile mark along designated interstates and highways.
The funding follows a legal dispute between the federal government and a coalition of states. After the Trump administration suspended the NEVI programme in early 2025, a coalition of 20 states filed a lawsuit. In January 2026, a federal judge ruled the suspension unlawful, ordering the Department of Transportation to release the withheld funds.
