Microsoft released the KB5124008 security update last week for Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. The update has caused widespread issues, including the loss of audio functionality and microphone failures on certain computers.
Users report that the update also disrupts the Windows 11 File Explorer, damages backups, and interferes with applications relying on Linux-based virtual machines, such as Claude Cowork. Problems with remote desktops and AMD-based graphics subsystems have also been noted.
The audio issues are specifically linked to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. In some cases, the sound settings menu fails to display correctly, preventing users from adjusting configurations. Microsoft suggests switching to a two-channel setup as a temporary workaround.
Microsoft has officially acknowledged the reported bugs. The company is currently developing a patch to resolve the issues caused by KB5124008, although no specific release date for the fix has been provided.
