Microsoft is developing an automated theme switching feature for Windows 11, currently identified in the Experimental preview build. The feature, internally labeled as Schedule auto mode, aims to address a long-standing user request for native theme management.
The system will offer two primary triggers for the transition. Users can opt to sync the theme change with local sunrise and sunset times based on their geographical location, or define a specific custom schedule for the light and dark modes.
To ensure a seamless user experience, the software includes a mechanism to prevent interruptions. The theme will only switch when the computer is idle, meaning the transition will not occur while the user is typing, watching videos, or giving presentations.
Currently, Windows 11 users must rely on third-party scripts or tools like PowerToys to automate theme changes. While the code for this feature has been discovered in early experimental files, Microsoft has not yet officially announced or confirmed a release date for the update.
