Users of Windows 10 and Windows 11 have reported system freezes occurring approximately 3 to 5 minutes after startup. According to reports from NeoWin, the issue has been observed over the past several months, primarily when devices are connected to the internet.
Investigations by users using Task Manager and Event Viewer point to the Secure-Boot-Update scheduled task as the source of the problem. This task is designed to check for secure boot updates every 12 hours. It processes updates based on an AvailableUpdates bitmask.
Microsoft documentation confirms that if an update attempt fails, the system logs the event and retains the status bit, leading to repeated attempts during subsequent runs. The company acknowledged that firmware or platform-level issues can cause the secure boot service to stall.
