WhatsApp is introducing a security measure that restricts access to accounts on devices running outdated operating systems. The change, identified in Android beta version 2.26.35.1, forces users to update their software to continue using the application. If an update is not possible, users are advised to switch to a newer device, use the web version, or choose an alternative messenger.

The developers state that this policy aims to protect users from security vulnerabilities inherent in older, unsupported operating systems. While the exact list of unsupported versions is not specified, current requirements generally mandate at least iOS 15.1 for Apple devices and Android 6 for Android smartphones.

As of mid-2026, WhatsApp remains the world's most popular messenger with approximately 3 billion monthly active users. It is followed by WeChat with 1.41 billion, Telegram with 1 billion, and Snapchat with 932 million users. These restrictions do not impact the current situation in Russia, where the service is already subject to significant access limitations.
