WhatsApp has introduced a guest calling feature that allows users to join audio or video calls without creating an account or installing the application. Participants can connect via a link opened in a web browser after being admitted by the host.
To initiate a call, the host creates a link in the Calls tab. Guests must enter their name to join a waiting room. This functionality supports both individual and group calls for up to 32 participants.
Hosts retain control over the session, including the ability to remove guests. Participants are restricted from sending messages or inviting others, but they can use screen sharing, emoji reactions, and the raise hand feature. Guest phone numbers remain hidden.
Meta confirms that these calls are free, unlimited in duration, and protected by end-to-end encryption. Only users with an active WhatsApp account can generate the call links.
By the end of 2026, WhatsApp plans to integrate with Google and Microsoft Outlook calendars. This will allow users to embed call links directly into meeting invitations, enabling guests to join without needing a WhatsApp account.
