WhatsApp has introduced a new 'Restricted Chat' feature for select Android and iOS beta testers. The feature is currently in the testing phase, and the company has not yet announced a timeline for a wider release. Users can manually toggle this setting within the chat information page, where it remains disabled by default. Once activated, the restrictions apply to all participants in the specific conversation.
The feature imposes four primary limitations on restricted chats: media files are not automatically saved to the device gallery, chat history cannot be exported, Meta AI tools are disabled for the conversation, and the chat cannot be synced to linked devices. Consequently, these conversations are accessible only via the primary mobile device. WhatsApp notes that this restriction aims to prevent unauthorized access by third-party clients or AI agents.
This update builds upon the 'Advanced Chat Privacy' settings launched in 2025. While the previous version focused on blocking exports and media downloads, the new iteration adds the restriction of limiting chats to the primary device. Currently, the feature is limited to one-on-one conversations. It is being rolled out in batches to users on Android beta version 2.26.39.11 and iOS beta version 26.39.10.20.
WhatsApp clarifies that end-to-end encryption remains the standard for all messages and calls, regardless of whether the restricted chat mode is enabled. The new functionality serves as an additional layer of control over content handling and device access rather than a prerequisite for encryption. Even with these restrictions, the privacy of communications continues to be maintained between the sender and the receiver.
