WeRide, in collaboration with Uber and the AVOMO division of Moove Cars, has secured the first L4 autonomous passenger vehicle operating license in Spain. The permit, issued by the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic under the ES-AV framework, allows the companies to deploy vehicles on public roads in Madrid.
The partners plan to launch commercial Robotaxi services for the public in Madrid by 2026, following the completion of regulatory and operational requirements. Madrid serves as the fourth city in the strategic partnership between WeRide and Uber, which aims to expand to 15 cities globally by 2030.
The long-term expansion plan includes the deployment of tens of thousands of Robotaxi units worldwide. WeRide currently holds autonomous driving licenses in nine countries, including China, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Singapore, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.
