WeChat has intensified its crackdown on accounts that impersonate official entities, use misleading professional titles, or distribute prohibited content. The platform's latest initiative aims to clean up account naming conventions and profile information, following a series of ongoing regulatory efforts.
Since the beginning of the year, WeChat has taken action against 91,226 accounts. Among these, 2,396 accounts were permanently shut down. The platform specifically targets profiles that mimic government agencies, news media, or professional services without proper certification.
The company prohibits users from embedding links or QR codes leading to illegal websites, such as those related to gambling or pornography, within profile bios or avatars. Additionally, the platform is actively banning accounts involved in buying or selling fake certifications and using software to artificially inflate engagement metrics.
WeChat requires users to obtain official platform verification before displaying professional titles related to finance, healthcare, law, or education. Accounts found violating these rules face penalties ranging from the clearing of profile data and temporary suspension to permanent account closure.
