WebMCP is an experimental browser API designed to simplify interactions between AI agents and websites. It allows web pages to explicitly define available tools, parameters, and constraints directly through JavaScript or HTML forms.
The standard for this interface is currently under development, with drafts and discussions hosted in the Web Machine Learning Community Group repository. The technology aims to replace complex web scraping with structured function calls.
Developer Denis Smirnov tested the implementation by building a prototype electronics store using React. The experiment involved creating three specific tools for AI agents to perform search, product viewing, and cart management.
During the development process, the author identified four technical challenges, referred to as 'rakes,' encountered while integrating the API. These practical insights highlight the current limitations and complexities of adopting WebMCP.
