Wayve, a UK-based AI startup valued at $8.6 billion, launched a supervised robotaxi service in London in early September 2026. The fleet consists of approximately 15 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles operating through the Uber app.
The company's AV2.0 system uses experience-based learning to process sensor data in real time, eliminating the need for high-definition maps or geofencing. A safety driver remains in the vehicle during all rides.
The service follows a June 2026 interest list that gathered over 100,000 sign-ups and regulatory approval from Transport for London in August. Passengers can book rides via standard UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric options.
Wayve raised $1.2 billion in a Series D round in February 2026, bringing total funding to over $2.5 billion. The company maintains partnerships with Stellantis and Nissan, with plans for a Tokyo pilot program by late 2026.
While Wayve aims to expand to more than 10 cities, full Level 4 unsupervised operations are not expected within the current year. The launch precedes Waymo's planned entry into the London market by the end of 2026.
