Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has secured a $5 billion loan to support its commercial expansion. This marks the company's first debt financing deal, involving lenders such as Blackstone, PIMCO, Sixth Street, Capital Group, and others. Goldman Sachs acted as the lead bookrunner for the transaction.

The funds are intended to accelerate the company's growth in existing markets and facilitate entry into new regions across the United States, Europe, and Japan. Waymo currently operates robotaxi services in 15 markets, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and several cities in Texas and Florida.

Previously, Waymo relied on equity funding from Alphabet and external investors. In February, the company raised $16 billion, reaching a valuation of $126 billion. Prior rounds included $5.6 billion in 2024, $2.5 billion in 2021, and $3.2 billion in 2020.

The company is currently testing its autonomous technology in London and Tokyo with plans for future launches. Meanwhile, Waymo faces regulatory scrutiny in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened investigations into incidents involving school buses and a collision with a child.
