Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has officially launched its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, Nevada. This expansion follows the company's existing operations in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, marking a new phase in its commercial growth within high-traffic tourism hubs.
The service operates 24/7, covering key areas including the Las Vegas Strip, the Fremont Street Experience, and major downtown transit hubs. Users can access the service by downloading the Waymo One app, with no waitlist required for residents or tourists to summon a fully autonomous vehicle without a human safety driver.
The fleet utilizes the sixth-generation hardware suite, featuring a combination of LiDAR, radar, and high-dynamic-range cameras. These vehicles have undergone tens of thousands of miles of testing to navigate complex environments, such as hotel drop-off zones, heavy pedestrian traffic, and frequent large-scale events.
Waymo collaborated with the Nevada Department of Transportation and local resort groups to establish precise geofencing for passenger pick-up and drop-off points. The service employs a dynamic pricing model similar to traditional ride-hailing apps, offering a private, driverless experience for passengers.
