Volvo has introduced the EC500 Electric, a 50-ton excavator designed to match the performance of its diesel-powered counterpart. The machine is currently in the pre-production stage, with initial units already deployed for testing in real-world environments.

The excavator features an on-board high-voltage battery providing two to three hours of continuous operation. For extended use, it includes a 35-meter cable reel that connects the machine to the power grid, enabling continuous operation without the need for recharging.

The system is built on a 400V base and is designed to adapt to various grid conditions, helping manage power fluctuations on job sites. This approach aims to reduce the load on local power infrastructure while maintaining operational flexibility.

The first pre-production unit is currently being tested in Norway, performing tasks in quarrying, road construction, and tunneling. Volvo is collecting feedback from these applications to refine the machine before its official market launch.

The company plans to use the data gathered from these pilot programs to finalize the product design. The official production version of the Volvo EC500 Electric is scheduled to launch in the spring of 2027.
