Volvo Autonomous Solutions has reached a significant operational milestone by transporting 3 million tonnes of material using its autonomous heavy-duty truck fleet. The company achieved this result in mining environments, operating without human drivers on-site.

The pilot program for these autonomous hauling solutions began in 2023 at the Boliden Garpenberg mine in Sweden and the Brønnøy Kalk site in Norway. By 2025, the fleet had successfully moved its first million tonnes of earth, eventually hitting the 3 million tonne mark during the summer of 2026.

The company markets its technology under the brand Autona, which provides a comprehensive package for mining and quarry operations. This service bundle includes the heavy-duty vehicles, specialized software, on-site infrastructure, and ongoing operational support for clients.

According to Volvo, this integrated approach allows mining companies to implement autonomous transport systems without needing internal expertise in robotics or automation. The initiative reflects a broader industry trend toward automating industrial logistics to improve efficiency.
