Volvo has unveiled updated plug-in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs, featuring significantly increased electric-only range. According to preliminary EPA testing, the new XC60 offers a range of 78 miles, while the XC90 reaches 73 miles. These figures represent more than double the capacity of previous variants and are currently the highest among plug-in hybrids on the US market.

The automaker achieved these results by integrating a 41.2 kWh battery directly into the vehicle floor, with 37.9 kWh being usable. This design, borrowed from Volvo's all-electric models, is paired with more powerful electric motors. The XC60 also receives a design refresh, including a new grille, bumpers, hood, and updated LED headlights, alongside expanded driver assistance systems.

The infotainment system now features Google's Gemini chatbot as a voice assistant. Production of the updated models is set to begin in late autumn 2026, with customer deliveries expected in early 2027. Volvo intends to use the revenue from these hybrid sales to support the development of future pure electric vehicles, including the EX50, EX60, and a successor to the EX30.
