Volkswagen is developing a next-generation ID. Buzz electric minibus, aiming to address the high cost base of the current model. CEO Thomas Schäfer confirmed that the future version will be more affordable, utilizing the company’s new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) to reduce production expenses and support software-defined vehicle capabilities.
The new platform is expected to deliver improved driving range, faster charging, and updated software. To achieve a lower price point, the manufacturer is considering the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The vehicle will also feature a redesigned interior and infotainment system, which includes the return of physical buttons.
Design chief Andreas Mindt stated that the next-gen model will maintain its iconic aesthetic with modern updates. While the company has not set a specific launch date, the SSP-based lineup is scheduled to arrive by the end of the decade, with the ID. Buzz expected to follow shortly after.
Market performance for the current ID. Buzz in the US has declined, with 432 units sold in the third quarter, representing an 82.5% decrease compared to the nearly 2,500 units sold in the same period of 2025. Volkswagen has delayed the US release of the model, skipping the 2026 model year.
