Volkswagen confirmed that the ID.4 and ID.5 electric models will be discontinued and replaced by the new ID.Tiguan SUV. The company plans to sell the electric vehicle alongside the traditional internal combustion engine version of the Tiguan, with an official debut scheduled for early October.
The manufacturer opted for the Tiguan name to improve brand recognition among existing customers. This strategy follows the precedent set by the ID. Polo, which also utilizes a classic model name. The new vehicle is expected to be built on the MEB+ platform, featuring upgraded battery technology compared to the current ID.4, which offers 58kWh and 79kWh options.
Design previews reveal significant changes, including a new front fascia with slim LED headlights, a redesigned rear bumper, and a different door handle mechanism compared to the ID.4. Volkswagen showcased two variants of the ID.Tiguan, differing in front air intake layouts and LED daytime running light configurations.
CEO Thomas Schafer stated that the ID.Tiguan aims to combine the versatility and premium positioning of the original Tiguan with electric powertrain technology. The company intends to maintain a dual-model lineup to provide customers with a choice between traditional and electric propulsion systems.
