Volkswagen is rebranding its electric models ID.4 and ID.5 under the new name ID. Tiguan. This decision aligns with the company's strategy to leverage established model names for its electric vehicle lineup, following the earlier renaming of the ID.2 project to ID. Polo.
The automaker aims to connect its electric offerings with its best-selling internal combustion engine vehicles. According to brand chief Thomas Schäfer, the Tiguan nameplate has been used for over 8.3 million vehicles, representing a strong brand identity that the company intends to carry into the electric era.
The new ID. Tiguan will share more design similarities with its combustion-engine counterpart than the previous ID.4 and ID.5 models. Official press photos released by the company show the vehicle in camouflage, revealing a more angular front, a continuous light signature, and classic door handles.
The official world premiere of the electric SUV is scheduled for October. The design features a contoured tailgate with a light strip, aerodynamically optimized wheels, and a prominent shoulder line, aiming to combine the characteristics of the previous ID.4 with the traditional Tiguan aesthetic.
