The streaming software Virtual Desktop for Meta Quest has integrated a new 3D environment featuring Landmannalaugar, Iceland. This addition is the result of a partnership with the VR travel application BRINK Traveler, allowing users to experience realistic landscapes while using the desktop interface.
Akin Bilgic, co-founder of BRINK XR, stated that the team previously attempted to bring real-world environments to the Quest platform through Meta. However, those plans stalled as Meta shifted its focus away from VR metaverse initiatives, leading the team to collaborate directly with the developers of Virtual Desktop.
The Landmannalaugar environment is not a static 360-degree image; it allows users to move freely within the 3D space. Developers optimized the scene to ensure smooth performance, as the Virtual Desktop application already consumes significant system resources for its primary streaming functions.
This release marks the beginning of a broader collaboration between the two companies. Virtual Desktop developer Godin noted that the team is open to adding more environments from BRINK Traveler in the future and welcomes similar partnership proposals from other VR application developers.
