VinFast is pivoting its Indian market strategy after failing to meet local manufacturing cost targets for its global models. The company now intends to focus on products specifically tailored for India, moving away from its initial plan to localize global vehicles like the VF 3, VF 6, and VF 7.

The manufacturer is currently evaluating two new models, codenamed VF X and VF Y. The VF X is positioned as an entry-level SUV with a target price below $12,000. It is intended to compete with local offerings such as the Tata Punch.ev and Nexon.ev. Design work is ongoing, though balancing dimensions with budget constraints remains a challenge.

To manage costs, VinFast is engaging Indian suppliers early in the development process, aiming to utilize existing components and tooling. Company executives recently met with approximately 200 local suppliers to discuss these plans. In July, the firm instructed suppliers to pause work on the previous global models and report any outstanding investment costs.

Currently, VinFast operates a plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, where it assembles imported kits of the VF 6 and VF 7. The facility has an annual capacity of 50,000 units, with potential for expansion to 150,000. Since the launch in September 2025, the company has sold approximately 10,000 electric vehicles in India, falling short of its production capacity.
