Variational, a protocol built on Arbitrum, has become the largest on-chain venue for real-world asset (RWA) derivatives by trading volume. The platform surpassed TradeXYZ on October 14, 2026, ending the competitor's year-long lead in the sector.

The platform's growth accelerated following the launch of its swaps product on September 1, 2026. This feature allows the protocol to access liquidity from traditional finance dealers, offering users more predictable carry costs compared to the variable funding rates found in perpetual contracts.

In May 2026, Variational listed six RWA markets with $188 million in open interest. By September, the offering expanded to over 119 markets, with open interest linked to traditional finance assets exceeding $700 million. The platform settles trades in USDC using a request-for-quote model.

As of early October 2026, total open interest in RWA perpetual futures reached a record $5.78 billion. Variational and TradeXYZ combined for approximately 84% of this market. The growth follows a $50 million Series A funding round led by Dragonfly in May 2026.
