Valve designer Pierre-Loup Griffais confirmed that the company is still determining the timeline and technical approach for the next generation of its handheld gaming device. While the development of a successor to the Steam Deck is confirmed, the release remains dependent on the availability of a suitable processor.
The company maintains that any new model must balance performance with power efficiency and battery life. Valve aims for a significant generational leap in capabilities rather than incremental updates. Griffais noted that the current hardware supply chain challenges have not fundamentally altered the company's development strategy for the device.
Valve intends to design the hardware based on the specific capabilities and availability of future silicon. The company previously faced significant pricing adjustments for its Steam Machine and Steam Frame products, which reached a price point of $1,059 due to component costs. Valve continues to evaluate offerings from manufacturers like Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm.
