Uztelecom and its subsidiary UZ-SAT have signed an agreement with Amazon Leo, securing the status of an authorized distributor for the satellite system in Uzbekistan. UZ-SAT will develop and provide connectivity solutions based on the low-Earth orbit network to local customers.
The satellite infrastructure is intended to supplement existing terrestrial networks, aiming to improve high-speed internet access in remote and hard-to-reach areas. This initiative is expected to facilitate better access to digital government services, remote education, telemedicine, and professional communication platforms.
For the business sector, the satellite network offers an alternative for connecting production and infrastructure facilities where traditional network construction is limited or not economically viable. The system will serve as an additional tool for connectivity rather than a replacement for existing infrastructure.
Uztelecom currently provides coverage to 96% of populated areas in Uzbekistan and operates 378 802 km of fiber-optic lines. The company continues to develop its mobile networks, data centers, and cloud platforms alongside this new satellite partnership.
Sherzod Shermatov, the Minister of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan, previously stated that Amazon LEO could potentially outperform Starlink in terms of quality, competition, and other technical parameters.
