The secondary market for electric vehicles in the United States is experiencing a surge in demand as consumers seek alternatives to high fuel costs. Used electric trucks, particularly the Ford F-150 Lightning, have become highly sought after by buyers looking for more affordable options compared to new models.
Data indicates that used Ford F-150 Lightning trucks are selling in approximately 20 days, which is twice as fast as the average used vehicle. Dealers are increasingly retaining these trucks for their own inventory rather than wholesaling them, as prices for used units have stabilized at 50 to 60 percent of their original sticker price.
Market analysts note that the shift in consumer behavior is driven by a focus on the total cost of ownership. Used electric vehicles are now reaching price parity with pre-owned gasoline cars, often offering newer models with lower mileage, making them the fastest-selling category in the used car market.
While the market for new electric vehicles has faced recent declines, industry experts suggest that the sector is stabilizing. New models priced at or below $45,000 are expected to support future adoption, alongside Ford's plans to launch the Fathom midsize electric pickup in 2027 with an annual sales target of 100,000 units.
