US imports of semiconductors, computers, and related hardware reached $74.8 billion in August 2026. This figure represents a fourfold increase compared to the levels recorded in August 2023.

Data from the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis indicates that the surge is driven by the construction of AI data centers. Semiconductor imports alone hit a record $15.4 billion in August, an increase of $2.4 billion over July.

For the first eight months of 2026, semiconductor imports totaled approximately $90.5 billion. Meanwhile, total capital goods imports reached an all-time high of $146.4 billion in August, bringing the year-to-date total to $1.02 trillion, a 39% rise compared to the same period in 2025.

The increased reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly from Taiwan, has affected the national trade balance. The overall US trade deficit widened to $105.6 billion in August, marking a 13.7% increase from the $92.8 billion deficit reported in July.
