In August, the US information sector experienced its sharpest single-month decline in over a year, losing 23,000 positions. This drop brought the total employment in the sector down to 2.745 million, marking the lowest headcount since 2015, excluding the pandemic period.

The job losses were concentrated in specific areas. Computing infrastructure providers, data processing firms, and web hosting companies lost 8,000 jobs. The publishing industry saw 7,000 cuts, while broadcasting and content providers lost 5,000 positions.

Over the last twelve months, the information industry had been averaging 8,000 job losses per month. The August decline was nearly three times higher than this recent trend. Compared to August 2025, employment in the sector has fallen by 115,000 jobs, a 4.0% decrease.

In contrast to the information sector, the broader US economy grew. Total nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 in August, and the national unemployment rate remained stable at 4.1%. The food services and drinking places sector alone added 59,000 jobs.
